A New Philosophy

Tuesday 9 February 2pm

Hungarian pianist and composer Ernst (or Ernö) von Dohnányi died 50 years ago on 9 February 1960. As a renowned concert pianist he toured widely, but his lasting legacy has been his work as professor of piano and later Director of the Berlin Hofschule, Director of the Budapest Conservatory and Director of Hungarian Radio. His philosophy of piano teaching had a profound influence on the development of a new direction in the teaching of the instrument. He compiled a series of intensive exercises for the fingers which aided the student far more effectively, and more quickly, than the various studies composed in earlier times.
