Twenty years is a long time any way you look at it. And if you’re a multicultural youth orchestra, operating on a not-for-profit basis, then that’s a real achievement. The SBS Radio and Television Youth Orchestra [formed in 1988 by Russian-born conductor Matthew Krel with the help of the Special Broadcasting Service in Sydney] is all grown up, celebrating 20 years in 2008! The orchestra truly represents the cultural diversity of our society, from the variety of composers it features in concerts and during its overseas tours to the wide range of its young players, aged from 12 to 24. To help celebrate, artistic director Matthew Krel and his orchestra team up this month with composer Elena Kats-Chernin to perform her highly successful, award-winning work the Wild Swans suite. To find out more about the artistic collaboration and the last and next twenty years of the orchestra, read Mike Smith’s interview with Elena and Matthew (Read More).
Twenty years plus ‘a little bit more’ since flamenco artist Paco Peña started his career. This month he brings his flamenco dance company back to Sydney with a spellbinding new show, A compás! To the Rhythm. Read more about it in Dan Sharkey’s interview (Read More).
Twenty years plus ten plus three …that’s how old your favourite fine music station is this year. And 2MBS-FM 102.5 continues with its annual tradition of Open Day.
On Sunday 25 May from 10am there will be library tours, studio demos and three free recitals in Studio C: Primavera Quartet (12.30pm), violinist Goetz Richter and pianist Jeanell Carrigan (2pm), pianist Tamara Anna Cislowska (3.30pm).
Come on down!
