Technical Operations

2MBS-FM has its transmitter atop the Governor Phillip Tower in Phillip Street, Sydney. This is one of the tallest buildings in the CBD which means we are able to provide a great coverage of the entire Sydney basin from Brisbane Water in the north to Waterfall in the south and west to Springwood and Blaxland. Some people living outside this area can also receive our transmissions but in general they require additional receiving antennas.

Our radiated power is 30 kilowatts, which is the maximum allowed by the Australian Communications Authority for a community operated station.

Our high quality stereo programs originate from our office and studios in St Leonards where we have three control rooms. They are designated A, B and C and broadly fall into the following applications.

Studio A is our main “On Air” studio with a complement of CD players, DAT and other digital facilities all controlled through a 12 channel broadcast console.

Studio B serves a double role. It is primarily used to pre-produce programs for later broadcast and is also the standby “On Air” facility for when maintenance is required in studio A. It has a similar equipment setup as in studio A, with the addition of a turntable.

Studio C has a 6 metre by 8 metre sound stage which is used for live performances and is available for hire for private recording sessions. Our range of condenser microphones and digital recording console provide a high standard product. Many music students have made demonstration CDs here to help promote their talents.

Throughout the studios and transmission chain we have made every technical effort to retain the clean, clear fidelity of the unique music styles we present.
