New Sydney Wind Quintet

New Sydney Wind Quintet presents Romantic Indian Summer featuring works by Barber, Taffanel, Grainger and Beethoven. Drawing from some of Samuel Barber’s previous work, Summer Music op 31 evolved into a quintet as the composer experimented with the New York Wind Quintet, premiering successfully in 1956. Summer Music op 31 evokes the aura of its namesake – lackadaisical in parts, and full of life in others. Paul Taffanel was a successful conductor and composer, and a founding father of the French Flute School. His Quintet in G Minor is a charming work in three movements with strong melodic lines and ‘romantic-style’ harmonies. Percy Grainger’s ‘Walking Tune’ is based on a little tune Grainger hummed to himself as an accompaniment to his ‘tramping feet while on a three day walk’ in the Scottish Highlands in 1900, and was worked out and scored in 1905. The Quintet op 4 by Beethoven is a carefree work set in four movements. It was originally conceived for wind octet and later expanded and re-worked into a string quintet. ‘NSWQ stand their ground against the Berlin Philharmonic quintet's recording' – Limelight magazine (Dec 2011)

Sydney University Graduate Choir & Orchestra Diamond Jubilee Concert

The Sydney University Graduate Choir, Orchestra and Soloists, under the direction of their conductor, Christopher Bowen OAM, will celebrate the Choir’s Diamond Jubilee with a concert featuring the rarely performed magnificent oratorio Paulus by Felix Mendelssohn. It is fitting this acclaimed choir, with its history of presenting the finest repertoire, should perform a breathtakingly beautiful choral masterpiece such as Paulus on their 60th Anniversary. Paulus was deeply inspired by Bach and Handel, and after hearing it, Robert Schumann praised it as the ‘jewel of the present ...this freshness, this inextinguishable atmosphere of the instrumentation ... not to speak of the art of composition.’ A wonderful collection of soloists have been assembled for this special concert, including rising star tenor, Andrew Goodwin, mezzo-soprano Maria Timofeyeva, soprano Celeste Lazarenko, bass Alexander Knight and bass Andrew Williams.
Mendelssohn’s Paulus is a powerful and inspiring musical experience.

Taldumande Youth Services Fundraising Event – In from the Cold

Tonight and every night in New South Wales more than 10,000 young people have no home to go to. Some will sleep on a friend’s couch, others may be lucky enough to find a bed in a hostel – but many will be forced to sleep out in the open. Taldumande Youth Services has been offering accommodation to homeless youth for the past 37 years, but, like many similar organisations, they are running short of money to provide such services. On Tuesday 8 May at Luna Park, the annual fundraising In From The Cold dinner is being held. According to comedian Jean Kittson, an Ambassador for Taldumande and MC for the evening, it is designed to be a fun affair and everyone is invited to help this excellent organisation continue its much needed work. Your participation could mean the difference between life and death for some young boy or girl.
2MBS-FM is a proud supporter of Taldumande Youth Services.
