Composer John Corigliano returns to Sydney later in the year for the Australian premiere of his Circus Maximus. Corigliano, winner of an Oscar, a Grawemeyer, three Grammy Awards and a Pulitzer Prize, visited us in 2009 with a new version of his celebrated orchestral piece, Mr Tambourine Man, based on the lyrics (but not the music) of Bob Dylan. The work filled a commission from Professor Kim Walker, Dean of The Sydney Conservatorium, for the 101 Compositions for 100 Years project which celebrates The Con’s centenary in 2015. Opera Australia premieres another exciting American composition, Carlisle Floyd’s Of Mice and Men, in this month’s program. The new production is directed by Bruce Beresford who continues his exploration of American opera. However, it wasn’t Steinbeck’s enduring classic that ignited Beresford’s imagination, but Floyd’s operatic version. Read more about that in Derek Parker’s interview.
